Description

This section of tree was cut from a large ash, known locally as Big Tree.

For many years, Big Tree, which stood in a large clearing near the shore of Seal Harbor, served as a landmark for sailors around the northern end of Penobscot Bay.

The tree was approximately 90 feet tall and could be seen from a great distance. It was struck by lightening in 1929, but stood until 1944 when it was brought down by a hurricane.

The inscription reads "Old Ash Tree 1936."
